GNR Edge is the smallest Theta/Theta X-ray diffractometer. It allows users to perform reliable residual stress and retained austenite measurements on production samples and specimens. GNR Edge can be used to investigate alloy structure and phase composition.

The instrument is compliant with ASTM E915, UNI EN 15305 (residual stress standard practices) and ASTM E975 – 13 (retained-austenite standard practice).

GNR Edge includes everything needed to take advantage of its portability and lightness for making residual stress and retained austenite measurements by X-ray diffraction in a portable manner. This advanced Portable Theta/Theta X-Ray Diffractometer enables users to perform accurate residual stress and retained austenite analysis directly on-site or in the laboratory, supporting critical quality assurance and control processes in manufacturing and structural inspections.

In the standard version, GNR Edge measuring head is mounted on a robust aluminium structure that holds the XRD goniometer, detector, X-ray tube and laser. The frame design allows all the necessary movements to maximise the analytical performance of the unit. It can ensure 4 degrees of freedom with Z, Phi and two inclinations. A separate control box is available to mount all related controls.

The system can operate with a standard electrical power supply as well as by batteries. Edge does not require water cooling for the X-ray tube.

GNR proprietary software for Edge supports all tasks from analysis, Data Acquisition. The software has complete control over the process and hardware settings (generator and tube, detector, measurements set up) for Data Analysis, calculating the residual stress or retained austenite values.

An extremely easy-to-use software for Uni-axial, Bi-axial and Tri-axial residual stress analysis developed in compliance with ASTM E915 practice and UNI EN 15305.

Residual Stress, Retained austenite, Portable theta/theta diffractometer.

  • Methods : ASTM E915, UNI EN 15305 (residual stress standard practices) and ASTM E975 – 13 (retained-austenite standard practice).
  • Smallest Theta/Theta X-ray diffractometer
  • X-ray tube and X-ray detectors move independently on the goniometer from 45 to 170°, no more at one fixed angle 156°.
  • Automatic scan for retained austenite measurement without the need to place detectors at right angles anymore.
  • Robust, stable and flexible measuring head assembly

Exceptional Portability & Ease of Use

Designed with a focus on lightness and ease of setup, the Edge analyser allows technicians and engineers to quickly deploy and operate the instrument in diverse environments. Its compact form factor and flexible configurations make it ideal for field use, including challenging locations such as bridges or production floors, without sacrificing analytical performance.

Comprehensive Measurement Capabilities

Edge performs reliable measurements of residual stress, retained austenite, and investigates alloy structure and phase composition. Its compliance with ASTM E915 and UNI EN 15305 standards for residual stress, and ASTM E975-13 for retained austenite, ensures that results meet rigorous industry benchmarks

Safety and Compliance

Safety is paramount in X-ray instrumentation. The Edge analyser maintains radiation exposure significantly below the annual dose limit for the general public (1 mSv/year), adhering to ANSI N43.3 – 1993 and other international standards. This allows safe operation in various settings without compromising user protection.

Flexible Configurations for Diverse Needs

The Edge system is available in multiple configurations to suit specific application requirements:

  • Standard Configuration for general portable use
  • Fixed Configuration with Laboratory Cabin for controlled lab environments
  • Bridge-Specific Configuration tailored for infrastructure inspection

Advanced Features for Precision

  • Laser-assisted positioning ensures precise sample alignment and measurement accuracy.
  • Air-cooled X-ray tube eliminates the need for complex water cooling systems, enhancing portability and reducing maintenance.
  • The Theta/Theta goniometer design allows accurate diffraction measurements with multiple degrees of freedom for complex sample geometries.
