The Koehler K1618X series automatic oil breakdown voltage tester of insulating oils to IEC 60156, ASTM D877, and ASTM D1816, enabling reliable transformer oil condition decisions for utilities, service labs, and OEMs. A controlled voltage ramp, cycle sequencing, stirring, settling, detection, and reporting are handled by the instrument to minimise operator variability and standardise BDV workflows.
Standards compliance and methods
Pre-programmed standard templates lock method parameters for IEC 60156 and ASTM D877, D1816, while five user-defined templates allow lab-specific optimisation of counts, ramping pauses, and stirring sequences without compromising compliance. This dual-mode approach preserves method fidelity for accreditation and repeatability while supporting productivity in routine testing.
Measurement performance and ranges
Choose from K16185 (0–75 kV), K16186 (0–90 kV), and K16187 (0–105 kV), each specified to ±1 kV measurement accuracy, with microsecond-level high-voltage shutoff protecting electrodes at the moment of breakdown. Automated results include cycle BDV values plus mean, standard deviation, and SD/M for immediate data quality assessment on the instrument.
User interface and automation
A 3.5″ colour touchscreen streamlines oil selection, template choice, and sample temperature entry, then displays live progress through voltage ramps, stirring, and settling with clear prompts. The device archives completed series, prints test reports directly, and supports viewing of numerical cycle data for fast decision‑making and recordkeeping.
Sample handling and electrodes
The 500 cm³ measuring cell incorporates magnetic stirring with configurable speed, current limit, and acceleration, ensuring consistent dispersion control across cycles and oil types.
Supplied and optional electrode sets support
- IEC 60156 spherical
- ASTM D877 flat
- ASTM D1816 mushroom geometries
with precision gap gauges and adjustment wheels for accurate spacing.
Data, reporting, and connectivity
Built-in thermal printer outputs a standards-compliant report including template, ID, electrode type, gap, frequency, ramp rate, sample temperature, liquid type, cycles, average BDV, and standard deviation. The on‑board archive can be exported to USB flash drive for LIMS or audit needs, with archive capacity indicators guiding data management.
Safety and reliability
A lid interlock cancels the ramp and drops voltage to zero if the cover is opened, and an emergency stop is available during tests to ensure operator safety. Continuous self-tests monitor inverter connectivity and temperature; any fault halts the test and displays diagnostics to prevent compromised measurements.
Verification and metrological control
A password-protected “Voltage Test” mode supports periodic checks. Without a calibration cell, conformance is indicated when the stabilised output differs from the set value by no more than ±2 kV between 10 and 75 kV. For accredited calibration, use the dedicated calibration cell K16185‑7 or certified differential kilovoltmeters via authorised service procedures.
The K1618X family combines method-locked templates with flexible user procedures, microsecond breakdown shutoff, robust archiving, and integrated printing in a compact 22 kg unit—capabilities that shorten turnaround while reinforcing traceability and safety. Support for mineral, silicone, synthetic ester, and natural ester oils expands applicability for modern transformer fleets and ester conversions.
Included accessories
- Measuring cell, gap clearance setting device, magnetic oil stirrer, magnetic stirrer remover, electrode polishing cloth, mushroom electrode, USB flash drive, power cable, paper roll, operation manual, storage box.
